neighbour_dominican_1Launched in 2013 Meet our Neighbours is project dedicated to bring tactile astronomy experience for visually impaired children and their non-visually impaired peers through the use of astronomy hands-on low cost activities. The project is supported by Europlanet and Galileo Teacher Training Program and has reached many communities around the world, including Dominican Republic.

Recently the project approached the visually impaired children of Dominican Republic. Helped by educators, the children were able to build tactile images of the planets and moons in our Solar System using low cost materials and explore main characteristics.

This effort was possible thanks to Albhashy Lejkabre from “Manitas en la Calle”, a foundation dedicated to work with abandoned and abused children of Dominican Republic and to Breezy Ocaña Flaquer that also made this activity possible.

Meet our Neighbour project is the brainchild of Lina Canas. More information can be found at: http://nuclio.org/astroneighbours/
